Lawsuits Allege Actos Causes Bladder Cancer

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning on June 2011 that Actos (pioglitazone) has been associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. Actos is an antidiabetic medication that is used to treat people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is not surprising that Actos lawsuits have sprung up due to the Actos bladder cancer risk.

There is a consensus in the medical field that the exact causes of bladder cancer are unknown. However, in June 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to patients with type 2 diabetes. A review of a recent study revealed a possible link between taking Actos, a drug prescribed to type 2 diabetes patients, and developing bladder cancer.

Bladder Cancer Now A Potential Actos Side Effect

Cancer of the bladder can be caused by cigarette smoking, radiation treatment, exposure to chemicals at work, and as a side effect of chemotherapy. Sometimes, and especially in women, bladder cancer originates from frequently recurring bladder and urinary tract infections. An additional cause of bladder cancer is the drug Actos (or pioglitazone).

Actos is a medication that is frequently used as part of an exercise and diet program for the treatment of type-2 diabetes. On occasion, the drug is used to treat fatty liver disease. On June 15, 2011 the FDA announced that using Actos for one year or more could drastically raise ones chances of developing bladder cancer. As a result, Actos lawsuits are being filed nationwide.

Actos Side Effects Include Bladder Cancer

People who take Actos for over a year are an increased risk of developing bladder cancer says FDA.

Actos is a prescription medication used with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works on two of the common problems that lead to high blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. First by helping your body better use the insulin it makes, and secondly it also stops your liver from making more sugar when it doesn’t need to. Other Actos side effects include congestive heart failure.
